PENGARUH ISLAM TERHADAP CITRA KHAMAR DALAM MASYARAKAT MELAYU: SUATU PERSPEKTIF DAKWAH Islamic Influence Towards Khamr Narrative in Malay Society: A Da’wah Perspective

Abstract

Khamr was part of the precious goods and special drinks that had value during the time of pre-Islamic Malay. After Islam spread widely to the Malay world, the Malays massively became Muslims, and Islam had a strong foothold in their culture. Islamic teachings forbid the act of drinking khamr and all activities related to it. Thus, drinking khamr is seen explicitly as social deviance in Malay society. However, colonisation from the west in the Malay world did not change their belief in Islam, but the lifestyle and culture of drinking khamr had its own status, especially for the upper-class Malays until the wave of Islamisation in the government, had a significant impact on this issue of khamr. Therefore, the analysis from the library study approach and supported data from interviews that are employed in this study concludes that the presence of Islam has changed the landscape of the khamr narrative in Malay society, which manifests the Islamic da’wah movement in interpreting the meaning of nahyu ‘an al- munkar by the meritorious du‘āt in history of the Malay Muslims ummah civilisation.
